Portland Head Light, Cape Elizabeth
Lit up without precedent for 1791 by whale-oil lights, this beacon is found inside the wonderfully finished grounds of Cape Elizabeth's Fort Williams Park. Joined to a red-roofed Victorian attendant's home, the 92-foot-tall white cone shaped tower is regularly seen as an image of Maine's magnificence. From its area on a directing point at the southwestern doorway to the harbor, you can take in fresh salt air and in addition unlimited perspectives of the sea and rough coastline for which the state is known.
